CARES Volunteer Work Highly Recommended by Dr. Simon Bate
While assisting Amazon Cares, I traveled to work by boat – a speed boat that was just about the fastest on the river. This novel way of getting to work provided me with the opportunity to see what life is like on the river in the shanty town of Belen. I was amazed at how happy all of the people looked even though they have very little (according to our standards). Many waved at us, which made me feel a little like a celebrity!

Press Release in Peru: What Destiny do we Desire for Pets?
This is in response to the Peruvian government's refusal to release funds from the $153,000 grant from Spanish charity "Esperanza". The government does not deem new animal shelter facilities to be of importance to the human population!! This is the English translation of a press release being circulated in Iquitos. CARES has also received media and radio coverage.

Volunteer Trip Report by Dr. Bridget Naughton
The mototaxi
is THE mode of transport in Iquitos and there are hundreds
of them buzzing around the streets. We arrived at the
clinic and were met by Miguel and his wife Esther the two
vets who run the clinic. They were both very friendly and
welcoming and Esther took us to where we were to sleep. It
is at the dog shelter which is out of town on a small
river....

Report by WVS Veterinarian S. Maini
We needn't have worried. The set-up at the Amazon Cares
clinic in Iquitos was impressive, and the staff very
supportive of inexperienced newbies. Considering their
relatively limited resources, they achieve a tremendous
amount. Esther, the head vet at the clinic, is a skilled
surgeon and a patient mentor. She is supported by
fantastic veterinary nurses, namely Bethjane, Ricardo and
Harry. Having a group of new grads was a first for the the
team, and I can only hope that we were as much of a help to
them and their cause, as they were to us in our training.
